One critical area of focus in our work with clients is addressing self-stimulatory behavior—repetitive, often maladaptive actions that individuals engage in to regulate their internal state or arousal level. While these behaviors may appear benign or simply “quirky” on the surface, they can significantly interfere with a person’s ability to stay present, engaged, and capable of meaningful interaction and output.
So, what exactly is self-stimulatory behavior?
Also known as “stimming,” these actions vary greatly depending on the type of sensory input the brain craves—tactile, auditory, vestibular (movement), or visual. For instance, a person with a hypoactive vestibular system may constantly seek movement—such as rocking, spinning, pacing, or jumping—to feel balanced. Another individual might flap their hands or wave objects in their peripheral vision to compensate for deficits in central macular vision. While these behaviors may temporarily satisfy the brain’s need for stimulation, they reinforce dysregulation and wire the brain to seek more of the same unproductive input, keeping it in a chronic state of fight-or-flight.
