Federal Approval of Our Institutional Review Board: A Milestone for the Pillar Institute

Pillar Research Institute team meeting with federal Institutional Review Board approval announcement

By Dr. Holly Haynes

The Pillar Institute is proud to announce that our institutional review board (IRB) has been approved and registered with the federal government. This milestone represents a significant advancement in our research capabilities and ethical oversight.

The establishment of IRBs traces back to the aftermath of World War II when the Nuremberg Trials exposed horrific experimental crimes committed in concentration camps. These revelations led governments worldwide to implement protective measures for research participants. IRBs became a cornerstone of ethical research practice.

Our IRB comprises diverse experts from the Jacob’s Ladder community and an external member who provides additional perspective. This diversity is intentional and requires our board to include people of different cultural and professional backgrounds and areas of expertise. This range of viewpoints ensures a thorough examination of research proposals from multiple angles, as we recognize that neither all scientists nor all practitioners should dominate these critical discussions.

The board’s primary function is to serve as the conscience of the Pillar Institute, ensuring all research adheres to strict ethical standards. Before any study begins, researchers must submit their proposals to the IRB for review. The board evaluates protocols for participant safety, informed consent, and confidentiality protection throughout the research process.

Beyond providing ethical oversight, our federally registered status opens new opportunities for collaboration with colleges and universities, expanding our research capabilities and potential impact. This registration marks an achievement and a gateway to broader research possibilities at Jacob’s Ladder.

We look forward to this new chapter in Jacob’s Ladder’s commitment to ethical, innovative research that advances our field while protecting and respecting our participants.
